The 8th Fighter Group was one of six American fighter groups that served with General MacArthur's Fifth Air Force, fighting its way across the Pacific from the earliest combat operations over New Guinea during April of 1942, to the skies of Japan at the end of the war. By this time, the unit had achieved nearly 450 aerial victories, and it was one of the premier American air combat units in the Pacific Theater.
